“I love shawls and bits of cloth”, explains Dame Vivienne Westwood of today’s theatrical ensemble. “It’s do it yourself. My favourite things in this collection are the cloaks, which are nothing more than pieces of fabric. It’s true they’ve got a label, and string to tie, but anyone can just take any blanket, pair of curtains or a beautiful lump f fabric and hurl it around them. I just think that’s really glamorous, and interesting.” Westwood, who never watches television, loves reading, does’t like going on holiday, and rides a bicycle to work, is deeply concerned with climate change. It’s all in her Active Resistance to Propaganda manifesto. “We have a choice. To become more cultivated, and therefore more human - or, by not choosing, to be the destructive and self-destroying animal, the victim of our own cleverness.” Here, she wears a dress and shawl from the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label s/s ‘O8 collection, with a headpiece from her own wardrobe.
